The self-esteem movement got the order backwards

This guide opens with an argument rather than an affirmation. Since the 1960s, education policy has assumed that if you build self-esteem, confidence follows. The book’s position is that this is backwards, and that praising esteem without competence “tends to produce impostor syndrome.”

The real foundation is competence. Confidence built on being told you are good collapses under contact with reality. Confidence built on demonstrable skill does not. Roughly 10,700 words over 29 pages make that case and then act on it.

The game plan is sequential, and that matters:

• Start with something you already do well — not the thing you are most insecure about
• Actually do the activities, rather than plan them
• Slice each one into components you can isolate
• Improve systematically, one component at a time
• Chase subjective improvement first, then shift to objective results
• Let objective competence become part of how you see yourself — then talk about it

The subjective-then-objective ordering is the useful bit. Demanding measurable results on day one is how most self-improvement attempts die in week two.
